FFA Opens Doors of Opportunity for HACTC Students

FFA Opens Doors of Opportunity for HACTC Students

By Jaden Sanborn, Natural Resources

“In the National FFA Organization, the letters “FFA” stand for Future Farmers of America. But FFA is not just for students who want to be production farmers; FFA also welcomes members who aspire to careers as teachers, doctors, scientists, business owners and more. For this reason, the name of the organization was updated in 1988 to reflect the growing diversity and new opportunities in the agricultural industry. Today, FFA remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.”

The above information from the FFA website defines their purpose and mission. In all of the 16 Technology Centers scattered throughout Vermont; FFA is alive and well. In some Vermont counties where agriculture remains a huge part of their economies, the FFA organizations are extremely active and provide many extra-curricular activities for the students. Here at HACTC most of our students do not come from farming backgrounds.

For us at the HACTC, FFA serves us with two major opportunities. First, FFA allows us to participate in statewide competitions. We compete in the State of Vermont Soils/Land Judging competition every fall at Vermont Technical College and in the State of Vermont Winter Forestry competition held at the Vermont Farm Show in January. These events give us a goal of achievement to strive for and, maybe more importantly, we get to see other FFA students from all around Vermont. Agriculture and the love of the out of doors is alive and well in our state and community. Secondly, the FFA presents us with a multitude of leadership opportunities. In our Natural Resources classes at the HACTC, we elect class officers who have their own assigned roles and duties.

Even though most of us will not become farmers, the FFA organization gives us some insight  into the career possibilities that surround agriculture. With this in mind, as a student many doors are opened for you, ensuring the best path and support for future success and opportunities.
