Engaging in my HACTC Program and Beyond
By Jordan Contois

I am Jordan Contois, and I am a senior at Ledyard Charter School. I am also in my second year of the Collision Repair and Refinishing program at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC).

The second word in HACTC’s Mission Statement is “Engage”. I have demonstrated engagement both in my program and in various other activities in my two years here at the HACTC. Leadership activities I have engaged in include being a program representative on the HACTC Student Advisory Board, participating in and leading an activity at the Women Can Do Expo last fall, helping my instructor this past summer at the HACTC summer tech camp, being a mentor for a middle school student in the HACTC Navigator Program, and being an announcer at the first awards assembly this school year.

An activity that has been meaningful to me is being a mentor in the HACTC Navigator program. This program matches seniors with students from area middle schools, and we meet here at the HACTC every other week.  It means a lot to me that I get to be a part of someone’s growth, be a teacher, be someone’s rock, and be someone they can turn to.

I have enjoyed being in the Collision Repair and Refinishing program these past two years. My favorite thing to do in my program is painting. I will be submitting two of my art pieces in the upcoming HACTC Art Show: my fender panel project from last year, and a bench made from old car parts from this year. I am very excited to participate in the art show.

I have also been recognized in a number of ways these past two years. Examples of this include the HACTC student of the month, and Hartford Rotary Student of the Month.  I am most proud of being recently nominated and accepted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS).

This is all helping me prepare for college at Lincoln Technical Institute this fall. After college I want to pursue a career in custom paint and detailing.
