Intro to Law Enforcement
Community Policing and the Path to Becoming an Officer
Have you thought about a career in law enforcement? This 10-session evening course introduces you to what it takes to become a police officer. It's taught by Captain Schibuola of the Hanover Police Department, with support from the Hartford Police Department, so you'll learn from working officers. You'll practice real-world scenarios, learn how hiring and the police academy work, and finish with two certifications to add to your résumé. No experience is necessary, and the course is open to anyone exploring the field.

What you'll learn

  • Community policing: the principles behind it and how officers build trust and partnerships in the communities they serve
  • Hands-on scenarios: real-world situations officers face on the job, practiced together
  • The road to the badge: how hiring and onboarding work and what to expect at the police academy
  • CPR certification: lifesaving skills you'll be certified in by the end of the course
  • ICS certification: the Incident Command System that emergency responders use to coordinate during critical incidents

Who Is This For?

  • Individuals interested in law enforcement as a career
  • Individuals who are interested in the police academy
  • Anyone who is exploring community oriented, career options in high demand fields  in our region
